Boeing Employees Credit Union
Many readers were wanting to learn more about the Boeing Employees Credit Union, specifically people wanted to know if they were eligible to join. I sent out a community email to subscribers and asked for information. David White was the first to respond back and here is what he had to say.
If you want a commercial bank then Washington Mutual seems to have the lowest fee’s and has a number of branches. Seafirst seems to have the highest and U.S. Bank is in the middle. If you are eligible (many people are) I would try B.E.C.U (Boeing Employees Credit Union). Low fees if any and good interest rates.
I don’t work for any now bank however I have worked for U.S. Bank and B.E.C.U. I have friends that have and do work for Seafirst and Keybank. In reguards to B.E.C.U….. Eligibility= anyone who does or has worked for ANY Boeing owned company OR ANYONE who is in ANYWAY related to that employee. (you would of course call B.E.C.U to verify that). Anyway that means if your Uncle in-laws 2nd cousin worked for Boeing in 1950 for 1 day then you are eligible. B.E.C.U. is not for people who want to have a branch on every corner…(they only have two) but they are the 4th largest Credit Union in the US. over 200,000 people.
I hope that clarifies things. Special thanks to David for responding back with the information.

March 28th, 2008 at 7:57 amI was able to dig up some more information in regards to eligibility for membership.
Essentially, any Washington state resident is eligible to join BECU. If you live, work, worship or attend school in a Washington state school district, you can be a BECU member. Or, if you are a past or present employee (or their family member) of: The Boeing Company, Boeing subsidiaries or affiliates, BECU or The Museum of Flight.

While the employees at Boeing founded the Credit Union, today we use the acronym to help alleviate some confusion because we are not owned by or affiliated with the Boeing Company. Proudly, we do have many Boeing employees as members.
More importantly I encourage your readers to explore the key difference between banks and Credit Unions. Banks have shareholders for whom they must generate a profit, Credit Unions have members who have voting rights and are not for profit, which means we can return profits to members in the form of better rates and lower fees. Pretty simple really.
As far as access, we (and may other CU’s) are members of the Shared Branching network. This expands the number of locations where you can do business by having other Credit Unions taking your BECU deposit or withdrawals and other basics.
We also have a large ATM network with the most sophisticated functionality around.
Bottom line, we’re member friendly and easy to do business with. Who wouldn’t want to do banking with a place that has member’s interest in the forefront instead of the shareholders?
Check us out!
And yes, I do work here and it’s also a great place to work.
Last word… There is no such bank as SeaFirst anymore. They were bought out by Bank of America in 1983 and in 2000 B of A eliminated the name and brand of SeaFirst.
