For more than 10 years, researchers like Dr. Cynthia Furse have been working to create a device that finds intermittent problems with wiring.

“We would be able to find those intermittent failures. We could tell you it has happened or it hasn’t happened,” she explained. “It will also warn you that you need to make changes in advance so that during regular maintenance you could go and put your clamps and insulation in place.”

Potentially keeping an airline from grounding all its jets at once.

Using Spread Spectrum Time Domain Reflectometry, researchers are able to send a signal down a wire, which bounces back an electrical echo when it reaches the end. If the echo is cut short, then researchers know there’s a short or break in the line that needs to be fixed.

“We’re able to tell how far away the fault happened. We can find the fault and we can tell the mechanics where to go to fix it, and they can fix it when the plane gets back down on the ground,” Furse explained.

The device is so accurate it can locate a problem to within a foot of where it actually is, streamlining the maintenance process. The concept was developed by researchers at the University of Utah.

 You know airplanes ALWAYS have a smell. ALWAYS. In fact the longer the history and the more interesting the history an airplane has, the more distinct the airplane smells. I have often wondered why that is and obviously it is because of the different leaks of oil or hydraulic fluid or melding metal. But each of those events (leaks, malfunctions, overheating or wearing) has a human story behind them … many of those “so there I was when this happened in that airplane” types of things. So, for me, when I get into an airplane and it has a certain smell … I know that she is a living piece of history … because she has made history for so many people … and is still making it now … for me. We weren’t born with wings on our bodies … but we have made wings of metal, wood and paper … and have done something that humans have been dreaming about since they first witnessed a bird fly. It is no simple thing and these great pieces of paper and wood become part of us and us part of them.

 So these guys … these real, living, breathing heroes in WW2 would fly these great machines … complete amazing things … and bring home themselves, hopefully their crew and their machine. Most of these incredible individuals are gone now … but these angelic aircraft still leap from earth today … spirits with them, and those distinct smells to hint to you that these heroes are in some way, still there … flying with you.

I absolutely love airplanes. When I was a kid my parents had split up and frequently they would fly me on Piedmont Airlines. I found this video on YouTube of a very old Piedmont airliner, which I believe is a 1942 Douglas DC-3.  Of course, I never flew on this particular airplane, it’s first flight was back in 1935 and the video shown below mentions that Piedmont had this plane in their fleet in 1942. The Piedmont Airlines airplanes that I used to fly on were Boeing 727s. I absolutely enjoyed watching this video and I think you will too.
