Virgin Boeing 747 Runs on BioFuel
For the first time in history a commercial airliner, a Virgin Airlines Boeing 747, was flown with a biofuel and kerosene mixture. The airplane was successful in a test flight between London and Amsterdam. Because this was a test flight, there were no passengers on board.
Richard Branson, Chief of Virgin Group, explains this situation as, “history in the making”. The biofuel used on the Boeing 747 Jetliner was a blend of babassu oil, an extract from babassu trees and coconut oil, commonly found in cosmetics such as shaving cream.
The purpose of expanding on this biofuel technology is to help reduce cost of fuel and help reduce carbon emissions; however, many environmentalist argue that biofuels actually do not reduce harmful emissions and actually contribute more towards global warming.
