AWIATOR, a research program with amazing results.
Our friends at Airbus have been undergoing some testing during the past few months that may end up with the application of some pretty neat devices on future commercial aircraft.
In fact, these tests were the last ones to be done in order to complete a research program called AWIATOR, which stands for Advanced Wing with [...]

Lidar Survey: Your Input Is Requested
Just down the orad from yours truly, Carry and Associates (Longmont CO) wants your help in a Lidar Survey. Details... Members of the lidar community are invited to complete a brief survey, available on the company website at www.caryandassociates.com. An executive summary of the research will be sent (in early 2009) to all respondents who provide their email address. Most questions are multiple choice, so the survey goes quickly. The path through the survey depends on the answers given; many re
The Mundane Becomes Interesting if the Context Is Changed
Tim Sinnott’s video of the Radiohead LIDAR was interesting to me for two reasons. First off it was nice to see LIDAR being used in what I suppose is mainstream media and the second is the thought that Thom Yorke would stand there and let a laser hit their face for what must have been hours. Well it looks like Tim O’Brien from O’Reilly apparently noticed this and asked Tim for an interview to talk about the process. The result is a nice little discussion about how we as GIS professionals app
Virtual Stonehenge: A LiDAR Survey Flythrough
A Virtual Stonehenge Landscape from Wessex Archaeology on Vimeo. Its not urban but is so nice that its worth making an exception to look at the results of a LiDAR survey around the area of Stonehenge.Prehistoric burial mounds (barrows), the great Cursus (a 2km Neolithic monument), the Bronze Age Avenue which links Stonehenge to the River Avon, and other henges such as Woodhenge and Durrington Walls are all clearly visible. The movie was produced by Tom Goskar from Wessex Archaeology To find
So It’s Not My Imagination About Bears Hunting More
Seen in the Courant: State police issued a total of 66,864 citations for speeding in 2007. During the first six months of 2008, state police issued 37,615 speeding citations, 16 percent more than the same period for 2007, Vance said. The article is actually announcing the introduction of newer LIDAR (laser) units with faster acquisition times. For some reason, the article doesn’t mention the recent expansion in the breadth of vehicles used in undercover speed enforcement, and the potenti
Radiohead Video No Cameras No Lights
In Radiohead’s new video ‘House of Cards’, there were no cameras on set. Instead, two scanning technologies were used to capture 3D images. Geometric Informatics scanning systems produced structured light to capture 3D images at close proximity, while a Velodyne LIDAR system that uses multiple lasers was used to capture large environments such as landscapes. In the video, 64 lasers rotating and shooting in a 360 degree radius 900 times per minute produced all the exterior scenes. Watch the maki
Creative Video: Radiohead’s “House of Cards”
Radiohead’s music video for its song “House of Cards” (from the Rainbows album) was made without cameras or lights. Instead, Geometric Informatics (structured light) and Velodyne LIDAR (multiple lasers) were used to produce the video. Some interesting information at the following link, with both the video and the making-of video to explain the technologies that were used.
Radiohead's 'House of Cards' video gets 3D, interactive, and extremely trippy
Filed under: Misc. Gadgets Leave it to Radiohead to do something twisted, innovative, and defiantly futuristic to the art of the music video. Instead of going with underwater singing, fully animated epic, or a mysterious series of "blips," the band decided to forgo the use of cameras altogether for their latest single, House of Cards. Using 3D video acquisition systems from Geometric Informatics, and 64-element, 360-degree LIDAR from Velodyne, the band was able to create a clip that eschews tr
New Radiohead Video
Radiohead just released a new video for their song “House of Cards” from the album “In Rainbows”. No cameras or lights were used but two newer technologies were used: Geometric Informatics and Velodyne LIDAR. Geometric Informatics scanning systems produce structured light to capture 3D images at close proximity, while a Velodyne Lidar system that uses multiple lasers is used to capture large environments such as landscapes. 64 lasers rotating and shooting in a 360 degree radius 900 times per

Doppler LIDAR for Wind Forecasting
Researchers at the Ocean University of China have developed a mobile LIDAR device that can accurately measure wind speed and direction over large areas in real time. Ocean University is located in Qingdao, the site of the sailing competition for the XXIX Olympic Games. While the motivation to develop this technology is the sailing competition, [...]
Australia Uses LiDAR to Build Hyper-Accurate Maps
The Coffs Harbour region of Australia has begun using LiDAR in an aerial survey to create maps not just of cities, but also of the surrounding environment and its change over time. LiDAR, as most techno-geeks may be able to tell you, is tangentially related to RADAR, and is an acronym for “Light Detection And Ranging.” The concept is simple– a laser is fired at a target, and the time and distortion of the returning signal reveals the range to, and composition of, the substance that reflected
